Temporary Rules for Restoration of Status

Published: Mar 9, 2021

If you are in Canada to visit, work, or study and your status has expired, you may be able to apply to restore your status even though it has been more than 90 days since your status expired.

At all times people whose status has expired have 90 days after the expiration of their status to apply to restore their status. IRCC has created a temporary extension of that restoration period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now people have until August 31, 2021 to apply to restore their status if:

  • they had valid status on or after January 30, 2020, and;
  • their status expired on or before May 31, 2021, and they are still in Canada.

This rule even applies to restoring status as a worker with an employer-specific work permit.

Even though you have applied to restore your status you are not authorized to study or work until you receive IRCC's answer.
