Collapse of the start-up visa and self-employed persons programs

Published: May 3, 2024

Effective April 30, 2024 the self-employed persons program is paused. The waiting time to be processed had reached 52 months at minimum. The waiting time to be processed under the start-up visa program, had grown to 37 months at minimum. Although the start-up visa program is continuing, the number of permanent resident applications accepted under this program is going to be capped. It is funny that IRCC is using the word "capped". It is not a big program at the best of times. Since 2013, only about 900 entrepreneurs have become permanent residents through this category.

I struggle to name one viable current permanent resident application stream aimed at entrepreneurs or businesspeople.
