Making study permits harder to obtain
Published: Dec 11, 2023
Bowing to political pressure, IRCC has decided to make it harder to obtain study permits.
Among these changes is an increase in the amount of money a student has to show when they apply for a study permit. The minimum financial requirement the student must show is now set at $20,635. This is an increase from $10,000. The $10,000 figure was set in the early 2000s. This increase is more than can be justified by inflation from that time. It is very typical of IRCC to create a program and then let it run without maintenance or updating for many years. This is especially true nowadays as the number of immigration programs have proliferated without justification.
The waiver on the 20 hour per week limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off-campus while class is in session will end on April 30, 2024. Only international students already in Canada, or applicants who have already submitted an application for a study permit as of December 7, 2023, can take advantage of this waiver.
