Special program allowing Canadians to sponsor family members in Haiti, Venezuela, and Colombia

Published: Nov 23, 2023

Sometime in the fall of this year (IRCC is being very vague on details) IRCC will open spots for permanent resident status for 11,000 people from these three countries if they are a child (regardless of age), grandchild, spouse, common-law partner, parent, grandparent, or sibling of a Canadian citizen or permanent president. The application will be through IRCC's Portal system. It is not available to people whose Canadian anchor relative lives in Québec. The Canadian anchor relative will need to provide a signed Statutory Declaration confirming that they are willing to support their family member once they arrive in Canada.

Please keep an eye on IRCC's web site for news. Because this program is so very small it will fill up extremely quickly.

The government did not create this program out of kindness. To get the USA to agree to modifications to the Safe Third Country Agreement and how refugees are processed at the Canada/US border, Canada promised to take 15,000 people from the southern hemisphere. The government has cheated a bit by including in that 15,000 person total, 4,000 people who are only being granted temporary work permits.
