Update on Special Rules for Ukrainians fleeing the war in Ukraine

Published: Mar 23, 2023

On March 22, 2023 the federal government extended the temporary measures available to Ukrainians. For full details, please refer to IRCC's web site. July 15, 2023 is the last day to apply for an emergency travel permit from overseas to come to Canada. March 31, 2024 is the last day to travel to Canada under one of the emergency permits.

There is no news of a special pathway to permanent residence for Ukrainians. On March 3, 2022 Immigration wrote:

"[We] recognize that some immediate and extended family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents may want to start a new life in Canada. For these families, IRCC will quickly implement a special family reunification sponsorship pathway for permanent residence. We will develop the details of this program in the coming weeks..."

There probably will never be any such special pathway.
